Years before Illinois lawmakers moved to legalize recreational marijuana, police in the largest suburban communities were already making far fewer arrests for cannabis crimes.

Arrests for marijuana-related crimes dropped by between 63% and roughly 80% from 2015 to 2018 in Chicago’s five largest suburbs.
