Last month voters in Utah approved a ballot initiative to legalize medical marijuana, only to see the state legislature pass their own bill that removed many aspects of the initiative.

Pro-marijuana advocates have filed a lawsuit against the Utah government claiming that the Utah Medical Cannabis Act represents a violation of the separation of church and state guaranteed in the Utah state constitution. The Mormon Church opposed the medical marijuana ballot initiative, and repeatedly advised its members to not vote in favor of it in November.
