New Jersey Mayors Demand Marijuana Charges Be Expunged When the State Legalizes
New Jersey mayors launched a forceful call on Jan. 30, 2019, for automatic expungements of low-level marijuana possession and distribution convictions.
Democratic Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Democratic Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said at a press conference that they would exercise their municipal authority and ban dispensaries from operating in their cities if they aren’t satisfied with expungement language in legalization legislation, commenting that jailing people for marijuana charges, while allowing companies to make millions of dollars in cannabis sales, is unethical.
